I've heard that Kaspersky is a resource hog. Is the threat of malware so real that it's necessary to run this thing constantly? Of course if it could be set to run only on demand (such as Malwarebytes) then maybe it would make sense. But all the time?

In more than 5 years I've never had a malware problem. All I run [constantly] is Windows Defender and I just apply some common sense, such as not to open strange attachments or exe files, and have your browser fully protected against ads, tracking and any other garbage that installs wierd toolbars or alters the settings. I also keep a copy of Malwarebytes for emergencies.
