Title: Windows 7 SP1-U dism problem
Post by: harkaz on July 28, 2013, 10:32 AM
Hi there.

I have used Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool (DISM) to add drivers to an untouched SP1-U ISO from digital river. After that, Windows failed to start, because of driver corruption.

It had nothing to do with the specific drivers I integrated, I checked it with many drivers. In all cases, I was getting the same error message.
I am downloading a SP1 ISO (without the -U) to see if problems persist.

Have you ever experienced a similar issue?

if your image is mounted in D:mount, use "dism /Image:D:\mount /Get-Drivers" to check your drivers are integrated.

The drivers seem to be properly integrated. The .inf files are there. I will test it on an original SP1 (non SP1-U) ISO right now to see if it makes any difference.

offtopic: Have you repaired the ultralite ISO after all?

No. will perhaps start from scratch later or will wait the release of windows 8.1 to see if I can tinker with it.

problem solved. ISO emulation issues was the cause.

it was acting up in vmware? no need to mount the iso though.
There is a mean to use a bootable usb key, therefore no more win7 iso, but it requires to tell vmware to use a specific iso in a few mbs which add the drivers. Ive done it once to test a key...its much longer with standard usb2 keys.

to the specialist harkaz: if you have a windows 8 iso could you test this to see if the nag screen is staying (I found this on a forum):
Enter Control Panel, there hit on ACTION CENTER and in there on TOP Left click on Change Action Center Settings and here in SECURITY MESSAGES remove the hook which marks WINDOWS ACTIVATION.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to check it, because I will leave for holidays in a few days.

I read that you won't be off this August :( This must be hard. Courage!

In fact in windows8, the only stuff that makes it unusable without activation is this screen that comes repeatedly:

Im waiting for the next windows 8.1 which will have again a start menu.

@Scarface - are you having an activation problem on Windows 8? That's impossible. On the torrents there are some 10600 activators. Honestly I have yet to run into one that doesn't work. As I've posted on here many times before, I installed W8 on my old laptop about 7 months ago using a strange activator I selected totally at random. As of yesterday it was running perfectly.

I dont use activators...microsoft really found some ways to prevent piracy with windows 8 but in reality Im bothered by the fact it cant be installed completely unattendly.

If you don't use activators, what do you use? I know you didn't exactly buy it.

Don't worry about Microsoft. They might pretend to be against piracy, but that's just a smokescreen. They know perfectly that without piracy there is no chance of having a "Windows everywhere" scenario. There are many examples of this.

to harkaz: if you want to boot vmware or virtualbox from a usb key, here is the iso to mount: http://download.plop.at/files/bootmngr/plpbt-5.0.15-test.zip
choose usb and then:

@Scarface - thanks for that link. I know what VMware and VirtualBox are all about. What I'm not too sure about is how you can use this test file to run an OS under VMware or Vbox. Can you enlighten me?

It would be great to run a test OS booting everything from a USB 3.0 drive instead of having to install stuff on your HD. I don't know if this can do that.

if you have your os on a bootable key, whatever it is, then the iso in the archive can be used to boot on the key on a virtual machine.
