Title: Tutorial for installing Windows through WinNTsetup (if usb boot fails)
Post by: Vasudev on May 08, 2015, 08:09 PM
Hello everyone this is a workaround for those who attempted several times to install windows via usb.
All you need is HBCD (Hiren's Boot CD) I'm using the latest version 15.2
I'm attaching pictures so that the tutorial is easy to follow.
1. Boot into MiniXP using Hiren's.
2. See the first picture where you can find WinNT setup on HBCD and the second pictures describing how to install windows.

(Sorry for not writing the tutorial step by step)

Points to be noted:
a) Copy to the ISO file to hard drive preferably D (other than C)
b) After selecting the path of win as depicted in second pic the iso will be automatically mounted w/o user interaction.

* Sorry for my English(Humbert & Scarface can correct this)

-scarface wished everyone wrote like that-

I'm sure this works but there are a whole bunch of USB boot programs out there that support Windows. MS has one on their site, and it works great because I've used it.

The problem with HBCD's MiniXP is the fact that it doesn't support USB 3.0 directly. You can't boot into it from 3.0 and, if you want it to support 3.0 to go a little faster after booting, you must install a driver. The driver must be installed on every bootup, it is not saved.

ISO is stored onto other partition and mounted automatically using imdisk in minixp so you get faster installation  since HDD or SSD has greater read/write speeds than a USB3/3.1 device. You're installing win7/8 using minixp. So no driver install reqd.

@Vasudev- What we do if mini XP from HBCD stopped?
On the newer systems XP doesn't start, because of loading some drivers specially graphics, and it ended with BSOD after the "Loading Windows mini XP" screen.

usman-> Minixp is not an regular windows xp. Its purpose is to fulfil specific  purpose using minimal resources and get the things done. Don't install gfx drivers, sound card drivers etc which are not needed anyway.

There were some intermittent issues but solved it by ejecting the cd and inserting it again. Try testing HDD for errors & fix them.

If I try to boot miniXP from HBCD all I see is the desktop and nothing else (no programs). The fix is to reboot, only this time from a USB 2.0 slot. After I do that, the OS will not see anything connected to a USB 3.0 port unless I install a driver. This must be done every time. Are you saying that the IMdisk program that comes with miniXP has its own USB 3.0 drivers?

Humbert-> all of you got it wrong. This tutorial does not usb3 drivers and bootable iso burned to a dvd or usb drive.
First things first, copy windows OS iso to your desired partition(I chose D); Next go to Winnt setup as shown in pic 1.
Next step is very important & careful, say for example my win7 iso is stored in D:\win7\maherz.iso, now use search button(in pic 2) and point where iso is stored(In my case it's in D:\win7\maherz.iso). Next chose where Winnt setup must install windows. Finally click on setup to apply the settings & install windows.
@Usman, @Humbert & @scarface could try this method & report if there are any issues faced whilst using this tutorial.

I believe a much better way to install any version of Windows is to use Windows USB/DVD tool or any of a number of other tools out there, such as those available on pendrivelinux.com (http://pendrivelinux.com). It's fast, straightforward and there is no confusion.

I should also mention the programs on pendrivelinux are portable and will run on miniXP with no installation.

@Vasudev- I used this method about 3 years ago, everything is well with me.
I only said that we can't run the "Mini XP" in certain cases on the latest hardware.

Windows USB/DVD tool is my hatred one, it is missing many features I require, it doesn't work on many systems.
From PendriveLinux, Universal USB Installer and Yumi multiboot USB tools are better.
On all I prefer WinSetupFromUSB.

@usman-> You used this method 3 years ago??? I found this method by accident because I was frustrated since usb boot was failing continuously as rufus could not copy some install.wim successfully. I'm glad some people around the world knew this method. For a second there, I thought I was an alien when discovering this method to install windows. Thanks

I had work practice about half a year ago, they had to re-install windows on a computer that had no CD drive, and failed to boot from USB. This method could be great I assume for those kind of purposes.

Hos is it the computer wouldn't boot from USB? You didn't get a boot menu when you pressed F8 or some other key? You couldn't go into the BIOS and reconfigure boot order?

If you can't boot from USB then how did you manage to install Windows on this PC?

We managed to create a network and host an installationfile over the internet. If I remember correctly. It was quite a while ago now. Like 2014.

So basically what you did was boot from LAN.
