I work in this as daily basis. So is better to do from point 0.
1) download the current release of maher xp
2) burn the media - use the software you prefer (nero, ultraiso, poweriso, etc) - In xp don´t try to use pendrive - it´s a waste of your time and money
in case of your use a netbook use an external usb dvd - ask your friends or buy one (it´s cheap)
3) backup your data in another media - this is very important - when i mean another media is another and not another partition in the same drive
(again - use your choice of software - acronis, norton ghost, etc) - I know a lot of people who lost tons of photos in a trip just because that.
4) install xp from point 0, drivers, softwares, updates, antivirus, etc.
in xp don´t install kb951847, .net 3.5, 4.0 or 4.5 becausse this is not update; its un upgrade and is going to slow your machine
if you need install .net 1.1 and 2.0.
5) install ccleaner and download glary utlities portable and scan your system.
6) transport your data and put in the right folders

I know it´s a lot of things to to but you are going to get a machine free of problems, it´s like a new shirt compared to an old one (with some holes on it).

ps - don´t try to use recovery cds from the manufacturer - its a waste of time

I have a problem. I formatted the partition c and started installing. After the first reboot, screen freezes when it says "Press any key to boot from CD ..." please help me. Sorry for my bad English.

rodtsuka

first of all - why you decided to format - errors during windows sessions, freezing computer ? this maybe a memory problem or hd problem.
download and burn some emergency boot cds (hiren´s, ubcd, system rescue) and test the hardware before installing anything. Maybe you
have a problem with hd, memory or even motherboard.

Other systems i install without problems ... etc. Ubuntu

rodtsuka

are you installing from a pendrive ? Don´t try to install xp from a pendrive, burn a cd or dvd and use phisical media, i always
had errors when trying to install xp from pendrive (xp doesn´t have drivers for sata or usb pendrives in installation mode).
If your machine doesn´t have a cd/dvd reader buy an usb external one, it´s cheap and worth a lot.

try to use another media or another format as dvd (use ultraiso or similar to modify iso settings).
