Hey Vic
Finally got you problems solution
the main threat from preventing your hdd from reading is MALWAREBYTES ANTI-MALWARE.
just for your sake i downloaded it and installed and went through the settings and found out that you should disable the option under Protection
disable the option "Start file execution and blocking when protection module starts"
I also found out that mbam blocks the auto-run, so after you install you wont have any auto-run on connecting any external devices.
and also make sure to scan your whole external hdd for malware infection.

if still this doesn't solve your problem then add your external hdd to the ignore list.

HOPE THIS SOLVES YOUR PROBLEM...

Hello all ^_^

I am trying to install XP on my laptop, but it keeps saying it cannot find a hard drive during setup. I googled, and it's apparently caused by no SATA drivers? Though I thought these were included.

Any help would be nice :D

BLADESHARK

@ Jak
Deinstall your sata hdd cables and again install your hdd cables
SATA drivers are included.

I don't think I can do that with a laptop/netbook.

Sorry for my ignorance i didnt pay attention to your question
I think you should contact your laptop vendor or supplier.
They might help you more than me.

Does yous previous xp boot.

Didn't come with XP. Came with 7, but it's quite slow on that. But, yes, it boots just fine. (And there are XP drivers available)

BLADESHARK

As you said it boots on Win7 just fine
so here you just need to change the bios settings.. ::) ::)

First of all go to bios and press F9 to load the default settings and then press F10 to save settings and exit
your computer will restart
again go to bios and make sure your sata controller is set to ATA, not AHCI.

good luck!!!!!!!!! :D :D
