Fuj-  The problem about Skype is that i can't disable the auto update if i'm not logged in (this is the freshly installed XP from Boss Maher by the way  :)) )... i'm a bit nervous about Skype's upcoming versions since it may not be compatible to XP anymore...that's why i need to block it permanently using just the host file (which i'm doing since).

Also, about the IDM...i am using the hosts file method to register it.I am avoiding .exe patch method as much as possible. For several years already, host file method is working for me...but now it won't...it keeps on saying the Fake Serial ,IDM is exiting. :-[

Like I told you the first time - run services.msc and disable the Skype Updater service.
As for IDM - software changes, you can't expect the same method to work forever.

Sigh...i have to admit you are right...maybe there's nothing wrong at all since i dont see any drastic effect on my unit's overall performance.Maybe i just need a clarification from someone (like you) who understand it better...

thanks a lot Fuj. :)

I'm with Fuj's opinion about that.

Regarding IDM, there is nothing wrong with your host file because this happened with me either.
It seems that they made newer versions of IDM capable of detecting that.
As for Skype.. Sorry, I don't know about it.

Wallofasgard, new Skype version is out today. It works fine on XP.
You should get it from this "secret" link: http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-msi
This installer comes without the crap and without Skype Updater service.  ;)

Every time I install a new IDM I also get the strange error message about a fake serial number. That goes away after applying the patch. There is no need to put in a new serial number. I've been doing this for quite a while and I've never had a problem. It's been ages since I've altered the hosts file.

You're saying if you altered the hosts file there would be no need to apply the patch? Hmm.. Can anyone copy and paste the lines in the hosts file that work?

Vasudev

you could try downthemall addon for firefox.

I've played around with all these downloaders and so far I haven't found anything that works as well as IDM. Honestly I think Flashgot is unnecessary, unless you know of a function that can't be done with IDM alone. Let me know if there is one.

I use "down-them-all" in Firefox for Linux only because there is no IDM for Linux. There's just no comparison - IDM wins hands down.

Hello, I'm attempting to install a version that was on here a few days ago with md5: c09028d55c5c0dd3343c1cd72c9ac07f

I'm actually trying to install to bootcamp partition on my mac through USB.  So I use WinToFlash to load the image to my USB, and enter setup. If I choose GUI mode, I get a HAL.dll error, if I choose Text mode, setup continues fine, eventually complains about a visual basic dll, so I skip it, and it finishes, and reboots, all good.

However, on the second boot, if I try to boot from the USB again I get the message "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem .... ", previously I had gotten simply a "disk error" message (when I tried it once before with a FAT32 formatted USB stick, this time I used FAT16 as someone recommended...).  This is a bit over my head I'm afraid.  Why is it booting fine for the first part of the install, but complaining after I boot the second time? Here is the boot.ini on the usb flash, I'm afraid I don't really know how what it is trying to do.

[Boot Loader]

[Operating Systems]
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT = "1st, text mode setup (Boot from flash again after finished)"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="2nd, GUI mode setup, continue setup + 1st start of Windows" /fastdetect
C:\ = "---> DEBUG, in case of HAL.DLL or NTOSKRNL.EXE not found errors <---"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Debug boot rDisk 1 partition 2" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Debug boot rDisk 1 partition 3" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Debug boot rDisk 1 partition 4" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Debug boot rDisk 2 partition 1" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Debug boot rDisk 2 partition 2" /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Debug boot rDisk 2 partition 4" /fastdetect

Thanks for any help...
