Quote from: scarface on August 12, 2022, 01:36 PMMaybe the situation is not so dire in the Czech Republic then. In France the retail sector has agreed on a joint 'energy sobriety plan' to save on scarce electricity this winter. In view of the possible energy shortages caused by the war in Ukraine, retailers have announced a series of measures that most supermarket and hypermarket groups will adopt from 15 October.

France generates 70% of its power via its network of nuclear power plants. Nuclear can run continuously and doesn't care what season it is. Are we talking about a situation where a great deal of heating has to be switched to electric due to lack of gas? If so, is electric heating already in place to allow for such a thing?

As far as you know did France stop making more nuclear power plants?

Actually, it's true that the nuclear production stands for approximately 2 thirds of the total production of electricity in France. However France is also importing gas: half of it is absorbed by residential buildings, while 30% went to industry and 15% to power plants.
Note that from the beginning of 2022 it is impossible to install a gas boiler in a newly built house in France. The date of 2025 is envisaged for apartment blocks. The aim of this regulation is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
20% of this gas comes from Russia. But if there is not enough gas, electricity demand will probably rise and it's not sustainable. Germans are already preparing for gas shortages this winter by buying portable electric heaters.

As far as the conflict in Ukraine is concerned, Putin was anticipating quick, easy victory, but nearly six months into the war, the widening gap between rhetoric and reality grows potentially fatal. How long before Europe's already shaky unity crumbles, if and when Russia's gas tap is finally turned off? In the likely absence of a pathway to outright military victory, Kyiv's available choices are all more or less repellent.
Despite its expected southern offensive, its doughty defence of Donetsk and last week's Crimea explosions, Ukraine faces a brutal, years-long war of attrition, as does the west.

Here is an interesting video you can watch:

I don't think Ukraine will fall any time soon, if ever. All NATO countries in unison are very afraid of a Russian victory. This is especially true in Eastern Europe, where the Soviet occupation has not been forgotten. Even former neutral countries like Sweden and Finland are now NATO members (for all intents and purposes) thanks to Putin. NATO will continue pouring aid into Ukraine for as long as it takes. The people of Russia and many insiders are tired of this unnecessary war, whereas most Ukrainians are saying they will fight to the final bullet. Putin as gotten himself into something far worse than he anticipated, and has no way to save face.

I heard the other day that McDonalds is re-opening in Kyiv.

BTW, the real expert on all this is Guliver. I wish he would post his opinion regarding all this.

After a few days off, I'm finally back on the forum.
Maybe some of you remember the video with the disappearance of a young student in Egypt. Humbert didn't wait long to react and ask more questions. The video was available here, in French...

Only one month later, on 18 August, and against all odds, the French backpacker who went missing in Egypt has returned to Paris after one year off-grid.
It's not clear what happened over the past year to Yann Bourdon, whose family had speculated that he might have been detained by Egyptian security services.
The graduate student at the Sorbonne, who vanished while on a year-long backpacking journey, declined to discuss his disappearance with the media and to share details of his return to France. Therefore, we don't know why he stopped calling his family.
Sarah Sakouti, a legal counsel for the Geneva-based Committee for Justice that had pressed the Egyptian and French authorities to investigate the 27-year-old's disappearance, said Bourdon flew from Cairo to Paris on 10 August.
A day before, Bourdon had phoned his sister in Paris from the French Consulate in Cairo, according to Sakouti. The same day, Egyptian state security services had announced they would facilitate Bourdon's return to Paris.
Before that, his family and friends had last heard from Bourdon in August 2021.
