But the real question here is whether this reported IE crash is somehow tied to Maher's November release.

It can't be. That is a XP64/ Server 2003 version of IE6.
Mahers XP comes with IE8

I too am an old hat at this. My first computer was an Atari 800-XE which sported the the 8-bit 6502 processor and ran at a blazing ±1.5 mHz (just like your old C-64). If it were possible to "fix, patch and polish" any OS from now until doomsday we would all still be using DOS. No matter how good an OS is, there will always be a ceiling, i.e., a point where continuing to upgrade until hell freezes over becomes difficult, if not impossible. XP, an OS designed for 13-year old computers, is already past that point.

I agree that XP was a good OS in its day, but from personal experience I can affirm that Windows 8 and 8.1 are far better, at least for me. I ran into more problems with XP in the 9 years I used it then I've encountered with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Not only that, but 8 and 8.1 are highly configurable - you are not tied down to all that garbage MS wants you to do. Also, just like you, I did skip Vista entirely.

It's true that guys who write malware, just like other predators, choose the easiest targets. Naturally the easiest has something to do with people who don't know what they're doing regardless of what version of Windows they're running. But I also find it hard to believe they will not attempt to target any flaw in XP after April of 2014, especially since there will be many hundreds of millions of computers out there still running it.

You made some valid points, but I will definitely stick with XP on my old machine which is still good and will remain good for many uses, and I won't be too concerned about security issues.

I've always said that if you're stuck with an old machine, XP is the way to go. The problem is I've seen some people on here who just got [for example] a Core i7 processor/motherboard and insist on running XP. If they insist on XP, then why throw their money away on an i7?

Guys, Maher has already told me that, due to XP support ending in April,  he too will not be making any more releases after that date. I strongly recommend to those of you who do not have the misfortune of being stuck with an old system, to bite the bullet and upgrade immediately. Don't wait for the last minute.

Once again and to prevent any misunderstandings: this advice applies ONLY to those of you whose systems can run at least 32bit Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Something else - any computer that can run W7 will run W8 or W8.1. Microsoft says this, not me. On my old laptop, I found that W8 runs better than W7. Don't think for a second that W7 is better for older systems, that's just not true.

Hi, Maher!

I'm a big fan of your works since longtime (TPB)!
I always prefer your releases cause they are CLEAN and UNTOUCHED!!!
But i'm wondering if you can make such Windows XP SP3 in other languages. Actually, i'm speaking French and i would like to have your Xp release with all updates in French (With ie8 and WMP11)!!!

Hopefully yours!!!
