Quote from: scarface on September 30, 2022, 08:28 PMhumbert is totally right: if shortages are more and more likely, it's not only due to situation in Russia.
With the coming fall, concerns are mounting again in France on the electricity supply front because 32 of its 56 nuclear reactors currently shut down. Électricité de France (EDF) announced on August 25, that four of these that have been shut down due to stress corrosion and small cracks in cement works will see their non-operation extended by several weeks this fall. The power company has said that the extension is linked to "a better estimate" of the time needed to conduct investigations and repair work. Similar problems have required the shutdowns of 12 reactors, while the other shutdowns are for maintenance.

Now I understand the problem. Still, I think that by shutting down 32 or 56 reactors they are being more overly cautious than necessary, especially when in many cases they're dealing with small cracks. Nuclear has a very impressive safety record. The first one went online in the UK in 1956. In all that time and with thousands of reactors operating around the world, I know of only 3 with problems: Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima in Japan. Only 3 problems in 66 years and with all those reactors is an amazing record. I firmly believe that with the safeguards in place in France, the chances of a meltdown are slim to none. Compare this to fossil fuel plants. Not only have there be more accidents but the effects on the environment and climate change are horrendous. Coal is the worst offender. And keep in mind you can't exactly put a dam just anywhere. France is doing a great thing by fixing and upgrading it's nuclear power infrastructure. Technology has improved tremendously in 66 years.

Quote from: scarface on September 30, 2022, 08:28 PMOn Thursday, August 25, they reached 900 euros per megawatt-hour, for delivery next year, compared to less than 100 euros a year ago and less than 50 euros on average in previous years.

I don't understand something. Are you saying your electric bill is 900€ per megawatt-hour -- or 90¢ per kilowatt-hour? That can't be right. Last month I paid about 13.9¢ per kWh, not including taxes. It's a little less in winter because of no surcharge (i.e., increased summer consumption due to heavy A/C use). It's a big difference.

Glad you mentioned Ukraine. As we all know they've all but won the war. Since time immemorial the Russian soldier's biggest enemy is the Russian government itself. The horror stories I keep hearing about low morale due to lack of support and cruel treatment by their superiors is mind boggling. Remember in World War I they where rationed to 3 bullets per man per day. In World War II retreating soldiers were shot to death. Bullets meant for the enemy were used on their own troops. Not much has changed. In fact, the morale and will to fight is so low that Ukraine keep saying that Russia is the number 1 weapons supplier. Far more of their arsenal comes from Russia than all NATO countries combined. All the weapons are abandoned, almost unused, by men who have no interest in fighting.

The video sounds like pure speculation based on some comment Biden made a while back. If indeed the Americans were serious about this kind of sabotage, rest assured they would have claimed responsibility. The other day on the news one of Putin's stooges came out publicly and blamed Ukraine. I don't see how this is possible. Ukraine has no direct access to the Baltic plus they've got all their military kicking Putin's asss.

Does anyone REALLY know why the pipeline is leaking?

This is not the price paid by households in France because the French Parliament adopted a series of measures on Aug. 4 to increase purchasing power and shield the country against energy price spikes and soaring inflation. But this is the price paid by firms indeed. That's why public swimming pools, steel plants or even bakeries are forced to close in France or in Europe when they are not economically viable.

In France where electric power is mainly generated by nuclear reactors, the price surge on wholesale markets is driven by a marginal energy source: natural gas. The paradox is that's not due to a market failure but to the particularities of electricity production and consumption.

Much is due to an unfortunate combination of economic and environmental factors. Many countries are reopening after COVID-19 restrictions, which has increased global energy demand, and Europe and Asia are competing to buy gas. Maintenance work on gas infrastructure in Norway has limited Europe's supplies. And a cold winter and spring followed by a hot summer meant more demand than usual for energy for heating and air-conditioning. Lack of wind in northern Europe over the summer led to higher demand for coal and gas to fill the shortfall in wind-powered electricity generation.

Russia – Europe's largest provider of natural gas – has its own problems. A fire at a Russian processing plant in August cut gas production and exports to Europe. With winter approaching, the Russian government has prioritised meeting domestic demand and replenishing storage. It has fulfilled existing long-term contracts to supply European customers, but (unlike previous years) it has not increased supplies to Europe to meet uncontracted immediate demand for gas (known as the 'spot market').

Currently, the EU's wholesale market is a system of marginal pricing. That means that all electricity generators get the same price for the power they are selling at a given moment.
But the price of electricity varies widely depending on the energy source used to generate it: the cheapest being renewable energy sources while fossil fuels are much more expensive.
National electricity producers make their bids on the market and the bidding goes from the cheapest to the most expensive energy source with everybody obtaining the price of the last producer from which electricity was bought, according to the European Commission.
Proponents say this model is the fairest and is cheaper for consumers in the long run.

Electricity prices have shot up in the European Union in recent months, which has led to calls to reform the way they are set.
Rising inflation and electricity bills have led to protests across Europe, with some leaders now advocating for the price of electricity to be decoupled from gas in order to ease the burden on households and businesses.
